Ken joined the Cabrillo College board in 2024 as Area 4 trustee (spanning the area from the San Mateo County line to the San Lorenzo River and from the ocean to Empire Grade).
He retired in 2025 after a 35-year career as a math instructor at Gavilan College. While there, he relished being in the classroom, and he served several terms as president of the academic senate, faculty union president, union negotiator, and accreditation coordinator. As he has for 25 years, he still co-leads Science Alive, an annual program where local middle school students spend a day at the college participating in hands-on science workshops.
Ken grew up in Maryland and came to Santa Cruz in 1975 to complete his BA in Mathematics at UC Santa Cruz. After he graduated, he was given the opportunity to teach math classes at UC Santa Cruz for 3 years, and then at Cabrillo for 4 years. During that time, he earned an MA in Mathematics from UC Santa Cruz, after which he joined Gavilan College. He served on the Santa Cruz City Schools Board from 2004 to 2014.
He has belonged to the Santa Cruz Masters swim team for the past 30 years; he still participates in swim meets and also rides his road bicycle. He loves to bake chocolate chip cookies and make lemonade and jam to share with his community. Ken and his wife Branwyn are empty nesters living on the west side in Santa Cruz with their two cats.
