Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)
Creating a Safer, Healthier Workplace for Everyone
At Cabrillo Community College District, we are committed to maintaining a safe and healthful work environment for employees. Our Injury & Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) establishes responsibilities and procedures for identifying and correcting workplace hazards, investigating occupational injuries and illnesses, providing required training, and communicating safety information throughout the District. The IIPP Program Coordinator can be reached at ehs@cabrillo.edu .
Program Overview
Our IIPP is established in accordance with California Labor Code §6401.7 and applicable Cal/OSHA requirements, including Title 8 CCR §3203. The Program is reviewed and updated at least annually and when changes to work practices occur or previously unrecognized hazards are identified..
Key Objectives:
Protect employee health and safety
Reduce workplace injuries and illnesses
Promote consistent safety practices across departments
Foster a positive safety culture with proactive communication and training
Core Elements of the IIPP
Program Management
The IIPP is led by the designated Program Coordinator, with managers and supervisors responsible for implementing required safety activities within their areas. EH&S provides overall program oversight, technical guidance, and support.
Employee Training
Employees receive IIPP and applicable safety training upon hire, when assigned new work for which training has not previously been provided, when new hazards are introduced, and when previously unrecognized hazards are identified. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring employees understand the hazards associated with their work.
Hazard Identification & Correction
Scheduled self-inspections, employee hazard reporting, and evaluation of new equipment, tools, and materials help identify unsafe conditions and work practices. Identified hazards are corrected based on severity, with FPPO work requests submitted when Facilities assistance is required.
Incident & Near Miss Investigation
Employees must report work-related injuries and illnesses to their supervisor immediately. The District investigates occupational injuries and illnesses to identify contributing or root causes and determine appropriate corrective action. Near misses and unsafe conditions may also be reported through the District’s hazard-reporting process.
Communication
Safety and health information is communicated through meetings, training, postings, written communications, and other appropriate methods. Employees are encouraged to identify and report hazards without fear of retaliation.
Documentation & Recordkeeping
The District maintains required records of inspections, investigations, training, corrective actions, and other IIPP activities in accordance with applicable recordkeeping requirements.
General & Department-Specific Safe Work Practices
Creating a safe workplace is a shared responsibility throughout Cabrillo Community College District. Employees are expected to follow the General Safe Work Practices and Department-Specific Safe Work Practices applicable to their work as part of their daily activities. These practices are intended to help prevent injuries and illnesses, increase awareness of workplace hazards, and support compliance with applicable Cal/OSHA requirements and District safety programs.
